How we rate
How we rate
The ToileRate score consists only of scores from registered visitors, approved by a moderator. No automatic or AI scores, no scores from Google or Facebook.
What visitors rate
| Criterion | Weight |
|---|---|
| Cleanliness (required) | 40 % |
| Smell | 20 % |
| Toilet paper | 10 % |
| Soap | 10 % |
| Hand drying | 10 % |
| Easy to get in | 5 % |
| Baby changing area | 5 % |
Each criterion is rated with a whole number from 1 to 5. If a visitor selects “Don't know”, that criterion is left out of their score and the other weights are recalculated proportionally. A missing baby changing table does not lower the score — only its quality is rated, if you used it.
How a place's score is calculated
A place's score is the average of all active approved reviews, shown with one decimal place. One person has one vote per place: a new review replaces the previous one once approved.
When sorting “top rated” places, a weighted average is used: a place with a single 5.0 review does not overtake a place with a hundred 4.8 reviews. Best-of lists only show places with at least 5 reviews.
Moderation
- A person checks every review and photo before it is published.
- We do not publish: offensive content, personal data, photos of people, advertising, reviews not about the toilet.
- A place owner cannot review their own place or change or remove visitor scores — they can only reply publicly.
- A paid plan (when available) does not affect the score.
What “Unknown” means
If we do not know whether a WC is free or accessible, we say so. Unknown information is never shown as “yes”. Amenities stated by the owner are the owner's declaration, not our check.
